Welcome!

I am a Special Forces veteran, with 23 years of active federal service. When I retired, I decided that I wanted to do something for others who are out and struggling with issues from military and public service. I founded Camp Cowboy to be a safe haven where people know they belong and are part of a family.

About

Vision:

We believe through equine based experience, education, and knowledge a vast multitude of “life’s scars” can be overcome allowing for a reconnected, well balanced life change for those in need.

Mission:

To use the powerful bond between horse and man to create an experience that allows veterans to cope with and heal with the burdens they carry.

501(c)(3) # 47-2373701

Camp Cowboy is a 501(c)(3) organization established in 2016 and located in the heart of Texas. Founded and operated by veterans, Camp Cowboy is dedicated to assisting those who serve and have served our Nation and their families navigate and overcome the stressors associated with military and public service. We also welcome First Responders and their families as we know they face similar stressors.

Camp Cowboy accomplishes its mission through practices strongly associated with the equine-assisted growth model and through teaching techniques from the “gentling process”. These models work because our horses help the participant become aware of even the slightest mal-adaptive emotions and patterns of behavior. Our role is to guide them in developing a successful working relationship with their equine partner. These engagements naturally involve evidence-based techniques that have been proven to lead to resilience and recovery.

By attending the Camp Cowboy program, participants become more self-aware, emotionally intelligent, and build healthy coping mechanisms. The lessons learned to successfully work with a horse, in turn, translate to life outside the ranch. We know that through equine based experience, education, and knowledge a vast multitude of trauma, stress, and associated disorders can be overcome, and new, more productive neuropathways can be formed.

Equine interaction experiences help promote physical and emotional growth in persons with traumatic brain injuries, stoke recovery, behavioral issues, abuse issues, depression, anxiety, many other health problems.

Equine experiences can build self-confidence, self-efficiency, communication, trust, perspective, social skills, impulse control, and boundaries. Since horses have similar behaviors with humans, such as social and responsive behaviors, it is easy for participants to create a connections with horses.

Camp Cowboy takes a holistic approach and understands the importance of family. Camp Cowboy helps grow the bond between families by opening new lines of communication, gaining better understanding of one-another, and problem-solving together through working with horses.

Recognizing the need for a “way ahead” for many, Camp Cowboy also provides lessons from industry professionals and an opportunity to network. Participants gain an introduction to Ranch Operations, Equine Training, Nutrition, and Veterinary Care, and much more.

Camp Cowboy operates out of Robison Ranch, in Kempner, Texas. a veteran family owned horse and cattle operation.
